The Coogee Beach SLSC places a high priority on education and training. Whether its ensuring members are adequately prepared to perform rescues, introducing children to safe choices at the beach or educating members of the public in first aid and CPR, we are committed.

Please note all course costs are in addition to the membership fee.

WA Nipper Rescue Certificate

FREE
Pre-requisites

Can swim 200 meters in a 6 minute timeframe, comfortable in typical surf conditions experienced at the Club, current SLSWA Member and 18 years or older. Course participants must be fully financial.

Overview

The Nipper Rescue Certificate aims to provide members with the skills and knowledge of basic water-safety and surf awareness. The NRC members enable our Woodside Nippers, (up to U/8) sessions to run in a safe and supportive capacity motivating our Woodside Nipper participants to feel safe and secure while they explore and perform their activities in the water.

Surf Rescue Certificate (CPR Endorsed)

Pre-requisites

Can swim 200m within five minutes (signed off by an authorised club person) Course participants must be fully financial. Minimum 13 years of age at time of final assessment.

Overview

The Surf Rescue Certificate is the very first stage of becoming a lifesaver. For U/13 – U/14’s who participate in Senior SLS competitions, the SRC is a requirement, along with minimum patrol hours to compete at local and state competitions/carnivals.

Bronze Medallion

$180
Pre-requisites

15 years of age (on the day of final assessment) Financial member of the Surf Life Saving Club. Completed a 400m flat water swim in less than 9:00 minutes (signed off by an authorised club person).

Overview

The Bronze Medallion is a nationally recognised qualification and teaches a range of activities in order to be able to perform all the basic requirements of a lifesaver:

  • OHS
  • Beach types, wave patterns and currents
  • Resuscitation and first aid
  • Communication & radio techniques
  • Rescue techniques
  • Patrolling methods

IRB Crew Certificate

Pre-requisites

Minimum of 16 years of age to commence training. Minimum of 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
Hold and be currently proficient in the following SLSA awards:

  • Bronze Medallion and Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
  • Have met the Marine Licensing requirements in your state/territory (where required)
Overview

This course leads to the SLSA Award Silver Medallion IRB Driver. Candidates will also develop knowledge and skills to enable them to demonstrate competence in the nationally recognised unit of competence:

  • PUASAR015A Crew small powercraft in a rescue operation.

Silver Medallion IRB Driver

Pre-requisites

Minimum of 16 years of age to commence training. Minimum of 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
Hold and be currently proficient in the following SLSA awards:

  • Bronze Medallion and Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
  • IRB Crew Certificate
  • Have met the Marine Licensing requirements in your state/territory (where required)
Overview

The purpose of this course is to help develop the skills and knowledge of course candidates to safely and effectively drive an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB).

Note

A current skippers ticket is a required to complete this course.

Rescue Water Craft (RWC) Operator

Pre-requisites
  • Minimum of 17 years of age to commence training
  • At least 18 years of age on date of final assessment
  • Hold and be proficient in Bronze Medallion.
  • Hold a current valid vehicle license with tow capacity.
  • Hold a Recreational Skippers Ticket (RST)
Overview

The aim of this course is to provide participants with advanced skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage a Rescue Water Craft (RWC) in lifesaving operations.

Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue

Pre-requisites
  • Be at least 16 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Complete a 400m swim in 8 minutes or less in a swimming pool of no less then 25m in length
  • Hold and be proficient in the SLSA Bronze Medallion
Overview

The purpose of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to participate as a team member in search and rescue (SAR) operations.

Gold Medallion (Advanced Lifesaving) On Application

Pre-requisites

Participants must be a minimum of 17 years of age on the date of final assessment, complete an 800-metre swim in 14 minutes or less in a swimming pool no less than 25 metres, and hold a current:

  • SLSA Bronze medallion
  • Advanced resuscitation certificate
  • Senior first aid certificate
  • Silver medallion
  • Spinal management certificate
Overview

The aim of this course is to provide participants with advanced skills and knowledge to manage emergencies in autonomy. Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive the SLSA Gold Medallion award. Assessment includes:

  • Perform complex patient rescue and support
  • Aided and unaided by equipment
  • Perform surf skill and fitness test
  • Work autonomously

Provide First Aid (HLTAID011)

Be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment.

Overview

Senior First Aid training aims to develop the knowledge and skills for a person to manage emergency First Aid situations and deliver competent emergency care until the arrival of professional medical support.

Radio Officer

Pre-requisites

Be a minimum of 13 years old to commence training.

Overview

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to operate communications systems and equipment in surf lifesaving operations.

Advance Resuscitation Techniques

Pre-requisites

Be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment and hold a first aid certificate.

Overview

The aim of the Advanced Resuscitation Techniques course is to develop your skills and knowledge to use oxygen, airway management devices, and automated external defibrillators during resuscitation, and to administer oxygen to casualties.

Resuscitation Certificate

Overview

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to learn CPR and AED use in emergencies. It equips you with the skills and knowledge to perform CPR and manage emergencies in the community or workplace until medical help arrives.

SSV (Side by Side Vehicle) Induction

FREE
Pre-requisites

Minimum of 17 years of age proficient in at least one SLSA Award and hold a current, valid WA drivers license (provisional or above).

Overview

This induction course enables participants to demonstrate the skills and knowledge to safely and effectively operate an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), (technically SLSWA only operates Side-by-Side vehicles) for use during beach operations.

Silver Medallion Patrol Captain

Pre-requisites
  • Be at least 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Hold an SLSA Bronze Medallion or have held an SLSA Bronze Medallion and currently hold a patrolling award
  • Have 2 years patrolling experience.
Overview

This course aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge required to confidently manage a beach and a patrol as a Surf Life Saving Patrol Captain.

Pain Management

Pre-requisites
  • Be at least 18 years of age on the date of final assessment.
  • Hold the Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART) Award.
  • Hold Provide First Aid (HLTAID011).
Overview

The Pain Management Award trains surf lifesavers to effectively manage severe pain in injured victims using Methoxyflurane, a fast-acting inhaled analgesic.

Drone Operator

Pre-requisites
  • Minimum of 16 years of age.
  • Hold any patrolling award (Radio Operator, BM, SRC).
  • Register for Aviation number.
  • Complete CASA RPA operator accreditation or hold RePL.

WA Training Officer (Trainer, Assessor and Facilitator (TAF) Pathway)

  • Be at least 16 years of age on the date of final assessment.
  • Completed eLearning Child Safe Awareness Course (accessed through the SLS Hub).
  • Completed eLearning Surf Risk Rating module (accessed through the SLS Hub).
Note

Before you can become a trainer in a particular award you must train and complete a logbook under the supervision of a qualified Mentor in that award. You must be proficient in the award.

Overview

This course prepares you to become a qualified Surf Life Saving trainer, equipping you to teach lifesaving awards.

WA Assessor (Trainer, Assessor and Facilitator (TAF) Pathway)

Overview

The Assessor Award equips you with the skills to plan, conduct, and validate assessments within Surf Life Saving’s competency-based framework. You’ll learn how to support candidates, develop effective assessment tools, and provide constructive feedback to participants.
