Our journey is a testament to the passion and dedication of our members, volunteers and local supporters. Explore the key milestones that have shaped our club’s proud history.

2001
Community support sparks action
A petition signed by 150 locals at the Coogee Beach Party called for the formation of a surf lifesaving club. It was submitted to the City of Cockburn, kicking off the official process.
On 21 February, the Coogee Beach SLSC Steering Committee was officially formed. Founding members included Daryll Smith, Ken Hodgkinson, John Bate, Scott and Michelle McKee, and Sandra Winter.

Club officially incorporated
On 2 May, the Club was incorporated as an Association. The inaugural Board of Directors was elected at the first AGM on 14 May, and the Club Constitution was adopted.
Training commenced with instructors Daryll Smith and John Bate. The club began preparing members for surf lifesaving qualifications.

Nippers launch
The Nippers program began, with strong early participation. Age Group Managers quickly developed a beach program to keep up with demand.
The Club’s first Bronze Medallions were awarded, and Coogee Beach saw its first volunteer patrol on 10 November.

Full SLSWA affiliation achieved
Just one year after formation, Coogee Beach SLSC was granted full affiliation with SLSWA — the fastest in WA history. First-year membership reached 230, far exceeding expectations.
The Minister for Sport and Recreation praised the Club, calling it a “well-respected institution” that served as a place to learn skills, build friendships and give back to the community.

Vision for growth
Rapid growth prompted development of a long-term vision and business plan. A purpose-built facility at Poore Grove, Coogee, was proposed to house the Club’s future.
The new Integrated Community Facility was completed — featuring clubrooms, storage, gym, BBQ areas and beach access. Widely recognised as one of Australia’s best-planned surf club facilities.

A thriving, modern club
Membership has grown to over 1,200. The Club is a respected patrolling presence and an emerging force in surf sports, with ongoing focus on lifesaving training, youth development and community service.

To acknowledge the dedicated and selfless contribution of persons who have provided extensive years of distinguished volunteer service to the City of Cockburn by extending them the honour of being awarded life membership of the Coogee Beach SLSC.
